Background of the study
Nigerian poetry, particularly in urban centers like Abuja, often employs complex syntactic devices to convey deep emotional expressions. This study examines how poets use syntactic structures—such as inversion, fragmentation, and ellipsis—to represent emotions in their work. These syntactic choices serve to heighten the expressive quality of poetry, allowing for layered meanings and nuanced emotional resonance (Adesina, 2023). In Abuja, where cultural diversity and rapid modernization intersect, poets experiment with traditional and innovative syntactic forms to capture the complexity of human feelings. Preliminary analyses of contemporary poems suggest that such devices enable a vivid portrayal of internal states, intensifying the impact of the poetic message. The study employs qualitative discourse analysis of a selected corpus of poems, exploring the relationship between syntactic form and emotional expression. It further investigates how these syntactic strategies may reflect broader social and cultural transformations within Nigerian society, thereby contributing to an enriched understanding of the role of language in art (Olu, 2024).

Statement of the problem
There is limited empirical research on the syntactic mechanisms by which emotion is represented in Nigerian poetry, particularly in the urban context of Abuja. Initial observations indicate that while poets employ various syntactic strategies, the precise impact of these techniques on emotional conveyance remains underexplored (Ifeoma, 2023). This study aims to fill the gap by providing a systematic analysis of syntactic representation in poetry.

Objectives of the study

  • To identify key syntactic devices used in Nigerian poetry.
  • To analyze how these devices contribute to the representation of emotion.
  • To assess the cultural implications of syntactic choices in poetic expression.

Research questions

  • What syntactic strategies are commonly used to express emotion in Nigerian poetry?
  • How do these strategies affect the interpretation of emotional content?
  • What cultural factors influence the use of these syntactic forms?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it reveals the intricate relationship between syntax and emotional expression in poetry. Its findings will benefit literary critics, linguists, and cultural historians, providing a deeper insight into how language shapes and reflects human emotion (Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing the syntactic representation of emotion in Nigerian poetry in Abuja. It does not include other literary forms or regions.

Definitions of terms

  • Syntactic Representation: The use of grammatical structures to convey meaning.
  • Emotion in Poetry: The portrayal of feelings and moods through language.
  • Urban Poetry: Contemporary poetic works emerging from metropolitan areas.
